New - Literacy and Essential Skills Specialist/Facilitator

Literacy Alberta is a provincial, membership based, non‐profit charity working to build literacy and essential skills in Alberta through innovation inspiration, and collaboration.

Literacy Alberta is growing and changing and currently seeking a brilliant and experienced Literacy and Essential Skills Specialist/Facilitator to round out our fabulous team.

Duties of the Literacy and Essential Skills Specialist/Facilitator are: 

  • Work with the Calgary‐based team to plan, develop, market and facilitate workshops and training on topics such as literacy awareness, plain language communications, and essential skills for living, learning and working in a variety of settings across the province.
  •  Work with employers, trainers and developers to embed literacy and essential skills into other training programs.
  •  Research, create and develop ideas for new projects.
  •  Assist in partnership development and proposal writing for new projects.
  •  Fulfill deliverables for assigned projects including successfully managing and reporting on project activities and outcomes.
  •  Speak publicly about the value of literacy and essential skills to a variety of audiences.

The ideal candidate will have:

  •  A depth of understanding about LES issues and solutions.
  •  Strong overall facilitation skills and experience.
  •  Participated in both mentoring and train-the-trainer facilitation.
  •  Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  •  Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with a strong team.
  •  An ability to travel as the job requires.
  •  Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite and technologies used in adult learning.
  •  Credentials as an adult educator or literacy specialist.

This position is full time and located in Calgary. An exceptional candidate from elsewhere in the province may be considered.

Program Manager and Facilitator (closed)

Literacy Alberta is seeking a superb program manager and facilitator to work with literacy practitioners across Alberta.

Duties include:

  • Design, plan, coordinate, host, and facilitate professional development opportunities for literacy and adult learning coordinators.
  • Provide support to literacy and adult learning coordinators working with the Alberta Advanced Education and Technology Campus Alberta Connections Branch.
  • Coordinate and facilitate training and support for Literacy Alberta's Regional Network of people working in seven regions across the province.
  • Manage the project plan, proposal writing, reporting requirements and budget for the professional development and support program.
  • Collaborate in all aspects of the program with key provincial partners and other stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An understanding of the AE andT literacy and adult learning funded programs.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the field of literacy.
  • A passion for quality, relevant professional development for literacy and adult learning practitioners.
  • Credentials and relevant experience in adult learning or adult education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional facilitation skills and the capacity to be a positive role model.
  • The ability to work and learn independently, while being a strong team player.
  • Appropriate and adequate office and computer skills.
  • A valid driver's licence and the freedom to travel.

This position is 0.8FTE (4 days per week). Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

While Literacy Alberta is based in Calgary, this role could be filled by an exceptional candidate, with a home office, in another centre. Preference will be given to candidates who live within relatively easy travel distance of the Calgary-Edmonton corridor.
