History
Literacy Alberta’s roots go back more than 20 years, with its predecessor organizations actively involved in promoting literacy within Alberta. The organization as we know it was formed with the amalgamation in 2003 of the Literacy Coordinators of Alberta and the Alberta Association for Adult Literacy. The creation of Literacy Alberta provided both a stronger voice for literacy action, a hub for literacy knowledge and promotion of best practices.
Today, Literacy Alberta is a leader in literacy and essential skills development, providing tools and resources, training and professional development. Our team of ten staff and consultants work hard to deliver our services province-wide. We are deeply committed to building a learning culture in Alberta, where it is a basic right to have the skills needed to fully participate in learning, life and work.
Literacy Alberta is actively involved in:
- research on the impact of violence and learning;
- a pilot project to bring literacy training to a Calgary women’s shelter;
- developing a resource kit to help businesses and agencies be more literacy friendly;
- developing a certificate program for Literacy Practitioners in Continuing Education at the University of Alberta;
- co-hosting annual literacy symposiums, and think-tank sessions;
- creating awards for literacy practitioners, volunteers and learners;
- as a member of Movement for Canadian Literacy (MCL).
Literacy Alberta has more than 300 members. We also partner with other organizations to raise literacy levels and awareness about literacy in Alberta, and across the country.
