Alberta Minister launches financial literacy motion

Alberta Conservative MP James Rajotte is supporting November - Financial Literacy Month by introducing private member Motion 269, so the issue can be debated in the House of Commons.

With activities to raise awareness about Fianancial Literacy Month happening across the country, we can all lobby to have this higher on the political agenda. With the world's financial crises, continuing misunderstandings about service provider bills and an aging population not financially prepared for retirement - we could all do with a boost to our financial literacy skills.

The results of financial literacy research found  British Columbia and Alberta students performed better than the national average of 35%. Forty-two percent (42%) ofof B.C. students  and 37% of Albertans scored an A. Both provinces have comprehensive financial life skills courses in their high school curricula.

However, this British Columbia Securities Commission’s National Report Card on Youth Financial Literacy recorded eternal optomism about their future finances, despite growing student loan and personal debts young people face.
