Literacy in 2012
It is the beginning of a new year and a new opportunity to face our literacy challenges with renewed energy. But, where to start? There are a few websites with ideas on how to get started - and keep a focus on 2012 goals.
2012 is the last year in the United Nations Literacy Decade. The reports generated by this decade will be helpful to everyone in the field - as facts, resources for program planning and funding justification, and, for sharing. The mid-decade review focused on the relationship between literacy and global development. Literacy Experts for the UNDL have already met to shape the foundation of the final report, with an eye to the future.
Social media continues to be a great influencer and source of information sharing. If you don't have a Facebook Page, likeLiteracy Alberta's, explore and consider one. 12 Ways to Literacy in 2012 is a nice example of a community literacy page. If you don't have a Facebook account, this site is helpful.
There are several key dates to keep literacy on the social, political, economic and media agendas. Family Literacy Day, January 27th is the first of the year. Literacy Alberta plans to take a literacy gift to a neighbourhood charity. It's not too late to make your plans. ABC Life Literacy Canada has resources to help you plan an event and celebrate. There is Literacy Month and Day in September, Financial Literacy Month in November and reading events throughout the year.
Whether you join in an established event, or create your own, involving the community is a critical component to keeping literacy on the public agenda. Best of luck with your events and literacy initiatives in 2012. Let us know what you are up to.
